HAITI...The Poorest Country
In the Western Hemisphere |
|
|
Aids is a major problem in Haiti that leaves thousands of
children living alone in the countryside naked and on the streets with no
one to feed or care for them. After the earthquake of 2010 it is
estimated there are over 2 million displaced people (many children) living in
refugee camps throughout Haiti.
If not for Marlaine and Daniel, many of
these children would still be on the streets begging, and would die of
diseases as well.
Marlaine & Daniel Alix are the founders of this
orphanage in Jacmel, Haiti. There are 81 boys & girls (6 are
toddlers) and many more on a waiting list. They feed, educate,
and clothe the children. |

Schmidt International Ministries founded by Jerry and
Linda Schmidt
helps to support Marlaine's home in Jacmel, Haiti with food and
Humanitarian Aid. |
Although the country of Haiti is poor, the views of
the mountains, the countryside, and the ocean are beautiful.
Marlaine and her husband Daniel purchased a piece of property in
Jacmel several years ago during tumultuous times of kidnappings and
riots in Port-au-Prince to provide a safe haven for their orphaned
children. The orphanage grew not only structurally, but in numbers
as well. They started with only one small building that housed a few
children and have expanded into two large, two story homes, one for
the boys and one for the girls.
There are 81 children at this time. Marlaine spends endless hours
raising money to help with the building projects, finding food and
supplies, and sewing uniforms for the children for school. Daniel
works each day on the construction of the buildings and taking care
of maintenance. |

The children in Marlaine's home
learn to sew and learn a musical instrument. Some of the older
girls are making items to sell to help with expenses. Primary school starts in
October this year for these children. The cost is
$450 US per child for tuition, and $60 dollars per child for their
uniforms. (In Haiti there is no public school system)
Fifty of Marlaine's
children need to go to school, the other small children are being home schooled.
The total cost for all the
children's primary
education per year is $25,000.
There are also five young
adults who are attending a local University at $2,840 per year
tuition. Additional expenses for transportation, and school
supplies total about $60 per student per week.
If you would like to sponsor a
student for one year or one month with a donation it would be such a
blessing for Marlaine and the children.

Working on the needs of the
orphanage is ongoing. Every year the people of Haiti battle
with hurricanes (pictured at left), flooding, starvation, and
recently in 2010 the earthquake that shook the already impoverished
country and left hundreds of thousands misplaced, dead,
orphaned, or abandoned (Pictured below)
Marlaine and Daniel, we, and
others continue to raise money for the betterment of these orphaned
children and for the improvements on the property and repairs on the
buildings that house them. |

Occasionally Daniel is able to hire help from local construction workers, and periodically
missionary teams from the states will take a two week trip to help with the
buildings, or help with the children. They never complain...they just trust the
Lord. A
word from the kids.
We
do all we can to help Marlaine and Daniel with the children in their
orphanage. Let us know if you would like to help. |
